Am I missing something Ed's.

All the talk seems to be about midfield and creative types, it seems a long shot to get VVD now but our defense has been shocking. Yes that is in part due to the system Klipperty employs but there has to be questions raised internally about the caliber of the talent too.

Last night Moreno spent approximately 7 mins (potentially generous) actually defending, headed the ball across our box or directly to one of their players countless times, and left our center backs and midfield hopelessly exposed on a number of occasions. Lovren looked a liability all game and was caught out of position from every left to right diagonal ball. Matip and TAA looked capable but had to constantly make last ditch tackles to stop shots or passes due to our left side collapsing. We have some good youngsters in Gomez and Roberts but surely this should be the priority. It was more good luck we didn't concede than bad luck that we did. I still think a back three and a deep lying mid solves lots of those issues but I'd not trust Lovren or Klavan in those roles.

Is there a reason this isn't being given priority? We haven't replaced suitably since the Carra Hyypia days.

{Ed001's Note - erm Matip was capable? Matip was dreadful and was as bad as Lovren, especially on their goal. The defence has been priority, they just have not been able to get the right players.}

I thought the boys defended brilliantly. I'm with Gerrard on this one, they were great. Moreno did get muscled off the ball a couple of times but he was, again, really good on the attack. Hoffenhiem are a proper decent little outfit and I was surprised how good they were. I knew it was no walk over. They have been unbeaten at home for time and if not for our defence it would have stayed that way. It doesn't matter how good your CBS are, teams are always going to get through. I thought we soaked up their pressure brilliantly. Hendo was great and that was our game plan.
