Hi Eds

Sorry to bother you with this how much do you reckon we have transfer funds wise after the Robertson (fingers crossed) transfer is announced? As I'm seeing a lot of links with crazy amounts of money and although it's summer transfer window n everyone's linked with everyone but I was just wondering.

Thanks in advance 👍🏼.

{Ed002's Note - I would ignore everything to do with money as it confuses. It is not a case of spending £65.21M on Keita and £71.6M on van Dijk as have already been agreed as "done deals", it is a question of when payment is due to be paid.}

{Ed002's Note - Sorry, I shouldn't have mentioned it.}

Would the transfer fee have to be fully paid in 3 years if the players contract was for 3 years?

{Ed002's Note - No.}

Ed, I may have misworded the question - I am not worried about the figures!
Was it tongue in cheek, or have sums been agreed for the players?

Harry, you should just come up with one new username that lists all of your previous ones. That way it keeps us all informed of your obsessions year on year 😉.

The majority of transfer fees between European clubs are paid over a two year period these days. From the buying club's standpoint, even if paid over two years, it's accounted for over the length of a players contract as a deferred cost. They may pay out £40m for example, but if the player is on a four year contract, the fee, salary, bonuses, singing fee etc is 'amortized' (spread) over those years for accounting reasons.

This is why net spend is useless.

That said, when players are sold, this is accounted for immediately, and any profit or loss on the player fee, as well as savings on the due salary bonuses etc are accounted for that year.

The money clubs save, can then be reinvested, including any increases on player salaries etc. The only impact player purchases have immediately, is on cash flow and the accounts for that trading year, and subsequent years for player costs spread over the lifetime of a contract.

Liverpool, for instance, could spend £250m on players this summer, but they'd also end up paying at least twice that in salaries/ bonuses etc in additional costs over the next 4-5 years. Hence the need to sell as well as buy. As a club, Liverpool can only afford that kind of outlay with success - which is why it's imperative that we secure a win from the CL playoff, and arrive consistently in the CL each season - it's the only way for the club to compete, despite strong commercial partnerships.

Sorry for the long post.
