Gael Clichy is being linked with a move to Liverpool, a few of the rags are saying we've offered him a 2year deal. Hmmm he's free and he is probably only a back up, not the worst signing to make. A few other left backs have been mentioned, Robertson from Hull, Sessengon from Fulham, and Rodriguez from Wolfsburg are now all "strongly" linked. IMO none are an upgrade on Moreno or Milner. Thoughts?

Don't we already have a back up In Milner at the club? If rumors of Clichy are true, then one of Klopp or FSG needs to leave now. Absolutely no ambition whatsoever if we are going after Man City rejects.

If we are starting #Kloppout or #FSGOut campaigns on the basis of rumours of potential signings being accurate or not then we really are taking the word fickle to a whole new level.

There is only one thing that we should judge Klopp on and that is performances and results over a sustained period of time, and perhaps whether or not the team is getting better. It should never be signings. let alone rumours of signings - almost no-one (including myself) has the ability to judge what signings make sense and which ones won't work (apart from Balotelli) .

Kieran93,

I agree that going for Clichy doesn't sound interesting or ambitious and I'm not a fan of Clichy to begin with. However, sometimes we need to be realistic. Just because we made it into the top 4, and everyone's reporting that we have money to spend, it doesn't mean the sky's the limit or we'll get whoever we want.

If certain rumours are true, such as VVD for 50mil, Keita for another 50, Lacazette for 50 as well, then we go for Mendy for 34mil, and Salah for another 30-40mil. That alone is already more than 200mil. Is this possible? Are we the next Chelsea or City?

So, coming back to reality, if we want money to spend on the likes of VVD and Keita, then we'll have to compromise by going for some cheaper options. So, how does that justify hate campaigns like Kloppout or FSGout?

I would not worry about Clichy. I am totally convinced the club has no interest in him. Just rubbish from the rags.

IMO Klopp is a good manager and FSG are good owners. The club is doing pretty well and progressing.

@DAPred - you are of course completely right in asserting that a signing does in no way justify a hate campaign against either Klopp or FSG - that is ludicrous and anybody doing so needs to give their head a wobble.

Looking at this, without the daft hate campaigns, I would be very disappointed if we signed Clichy. We already have Milner on some seriously high wages who will, should we sign a quality left back, act as cover. I don't see a left-back roatation of Clichy-Milner as in any way addressing our glaring faults in both the full back positions.

I agree with you - we may have to make some compromises and look at more affordable options - I just hope the fullback positions are not the places FSG/ Klopp choose to compromise on. It is by far the weakest area of our squad and the one in most need of addressing, I don't think trying to put a plaster on a gaping wound works - the centre back issues we have had are a testament to this: instead of properly addressing the area we signed Matip on a free (who hasn't been bad) and Klavan (who hasn't cut the mustard) - addressing problem area's on the cheap does not help anyone, the club would be better off saving the money.

It is noticeable that the 2 players we really did spend a large amount on (Mane and Wijinaldum) had a largely positive effect on the first team. That's not say to money = quality, there are of course excellent players available for reasonable prices - but these are hard to find and rare. The point is compromise - we should not be compromising when it comes to fullbacks, we should be doing our utmost to sign the best players we possibly can - Glichy would be, at best, a minor improvement at leftback and would command some pretty hefty wages - I'd be very worried if that was the solution the club finds to the leftback conundrum.

Chill people, it's only a rumour!

Everyone is dreaming of us signing someone like Mendy or Hernandez but we have absolutely no way of knowing if they will be any good in the Prem. We were all happy when we signed Moreno (anyone who says otherwise is full of it) and how's he turned out!

If Clichy does end up signing is it the end of the world? . No it's not, he is a proven LB in the Prem who is quick, fairly good going forward and not a total disaster defensively.

If the rumours are correct that we are signing Sessegnon then we need a senior LB, is getting one that is proven in the Prem and who has won more titles than anyone in our squad such a bad move for a couple of seasons on a free, especially if it means it free's up money to really go out and sign the 'big name' players everyone is demanding?

I doubt it but if Clichy was bring looked at it would be as back up or someone to take the pressure off the likes of Sessegnon. Milner was one of the best left backs in the prem this year. In not sure what that days about the quality that is in that position but I think we were crying out for a natural left foot there more so than someone better defensively. As for milner being back up. I don't think he is up for that.

We need to increase the size of the squad for depth, we cannot do that by spending 20mil or more on every player, this would be a great bit of business including an experienced title winner in our squad for no transfer fee.

Anyone who thinks he is not an upgrade on what we have may need to see a medical professional!

Every player that joins the club that is better than what we have or provides extra reliable cover is a step in the right direction in my opinion.
